This design started a customer request for a solution that allow would allow them to mount a RAM ball phone mount (this one specifically) to the ashtray spot.
I had previously developed a replacement front trim piece for the ashtray that allows me to mount my KG1000 radio faceplate to the ashtray itself by replacing the front cover, while still maintaining storage functionality (gotta keep the jelly beans handy!), so I knew I could quickly iterate to a functional design for this.
It requires no permanent modification to your vehicle - simply remove the ashtray body, unclip (or in the case of the 98-02, unscrew) the ashtray faceplate, and then snap mine into place (and put those screws back in if you've got a 98-02!).
It features felt-covered 'nubs' on top to lock the ashtray in tightly, preventing any rattle or vibration of your phone (or whatever else you have attached!).
Although not shown in the pictures, the current design being produced also has 1/4" hole + recess for a nut on the backside centered between the two #8 screw locations shown in the pictures. This has allowed people to mount Scan gauges & other devices onto this same mount.
These are printed in a glass-fiber reinforced ASA material for excellent long term heat & UV resistance!
